Real talk about hormones, hydration, and hyperpigmentation.

I’m going to be honest: I struggled to write this piece. As much as I’m embracing aging, it’s still hard to reprogram those deeply ingrained beliefs about growing older—especially when it comes to my face. Seeing Pamela Anderson rock a makeup-free looks has been a powerful reminder to lean into the ways we’re changing, not run from them. You can enhance your natural beauty by supporting your skin and its evolution.

I’ve noticed which updates to my skincare routine in my 40s have made the biggest difference in supporting the changes I’m experiencing. As you enter your 40s, hormonal changes, lifestyle adjustments, and years of exposure to environmental factors all cause an impact. So, here’s what you can expect from your skin as you enter your 40s—and how to stay ahead of it.

To break it all down, I reached out to Kayla Causey, a seasoned expert in the field. Kayla is a State Board-licensed esthetician in New York and California with 16 years of experience working with celebrity clientele. Kayla’s expertise goes beyond luxury treatments—she’s certified in oncology aesthetics through Wellness for Cancer, allowing her to offer therapeutic skincare treatments for those undergoing medical treatments. Her deep knowledge of skin health makes her the perfect resource for navigating the changes our skin experiences in our 40s.

6 Common Ways Skin Changes In Your 40s

1. Loss of Collagen and Elasticity

The loss of volume in my face has been my biggest challenge. This realization led me to try more aggressive treatments, such as Sculptra, to restore some of that youthful plumpness. “In your 40s, collagen production slows dramatically,” Kayla explains. “This causes the skin to lose firmness and elasticity, making fine lines and sagging more apparent.”

How to treat it:

Kayla recommends integrating products that stimulate collagen production into your routine. One standout product? Skin Pharm Youth Serum. “This serum is packed with peptides and growth factors that help promote collagen synthesis while deeply hydrating the skin,” Kayla says. “It’s a great option for anyone looking to improve firmness and texture.”

2. Dryness and Dehydration

After having kids, my skin changed forever. What was once oily and acne-prone became noticeably drier. Kayla notes that this is common. “Hormonal changes in your 40s often lead to a decrease in sebum production, which can leave the skin feeling dehydrated.”

How to treat it:

To combat dryness, I’ve doubled down on hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides. Kayla also suggests layering lightweight, hydrating serums under a nourishing moisturizer to lock in moisture throughout the day.

3. Hyperpigmentation and Uneven Skin Tone

Years of sun exposure begin to show in your 40s as dark spots and uneven tone.

How to treat it:

This is the time to introduce brightening products, like vitamin C, and chemical peels, and prioritize daily sunscreen to prevent further damage.

4. Increased Sensitivity

As your skin matures, it may become more reactive to environmental factors or certain products. This sensitivity requires a “less is more” approach to active ingredients and harsher exfoliants.

5. Changes in Texture

Rough patches, enlarged pores, and uneven texture are common in this decade.

How to treat it:

Gentle exfoliation can help promote cell turnover and smooth the skin’s surface. A high-quality or prescription-strength retinol is the gold standard when it comes to treating pores.

6. Dryness

It’s no secret that skin tends to lose hydration with age, which can make fine lines and crepey-ness more noticeable.

How to treat it:

Richer moisturizers and hydrating serums are a must in your 40s. Look for products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture. For budget-friendly options, check out affordable skincare for your 40s.

Here’s what to focus on for great skin in your 40s

1. Invest in Active Ingredients

This is the time to lean into powerhouse ingredients like retinol (for cell turnover), peptides (for collagen support), and vitamin C (for brightening). We rounded up the top anti-aging skincare products for forties, according to experts.

2. Sun Protection Is Non-Negotiable

Daily SPF is the single most important step to prevent further damage and protect against skin cancer. Reapply throughout the day, even if you’re mostly indoors.

3. Exfoliation for Cell Turnover

Gentle exfoliation, whether chemical or physical, can improve texture and brighten the complexion. Be careful not to overdo it, as over-exfoliating can lead to irritation.

4. Professional Treatments

Consider treatments like microneedling, chemical peels, or lasers for targeted concerns like hyperpigmentation or texture. Consult with a dermatologist to find what’s best for you.

5. Nutrition and Hydration

A balanced diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3s, and vitamins can make a noticeable difference in your skin’s health. Don’t underestimate the power of drinking enough water daily, too.

Stress Management and Sleep

Stress and lack of sleep can accelerate aging. Prioritize rest and find stress-relief practices that work for you, whether it’s yoga, meditation, or simply unplugging for a few hours. Changes in your hormones can also affect your sleep so get in the practice of good sleep habits and health.

Avoid Overdoing It

It’s easy to get carried away with too many active products, but this can backfire and irritate sensitive skin. Simplicity and consistency are key.

***

Aging is inevitable, but it’s also a privilege. Embracing your skin at every stage of life is empowering. By caring for your skin with intention and consistency, you can amplify your natural beauty while aging gracefully. Confidence and self-care go hand in hand, and sometimes, less is more when it comes to makeup and products.

Your 40s are a transformative decade for your skin, but with the right care, you can feel radiant and confident. Small adjustments to your routine, like adding hydration, using active ingredients, and prioritizing SPF, can make a big difference. For more tailored advice, explore this skincare routine for your 40s.

Above all, remember: Aging is a journey, not a destination. Take control of your skin health, celebrate this new decade, and enjoy the beauty of being exactly where you are and where you are in this moment.

mustard roasted salmon

2025 is the year of the LDD (low-dish dinner). Gone are the days of spending hours cleaning pots and pans—instead, I’m embracing delicious meals that can be done far more easily, like on a single sheet pan. Who doesn’t love a sheet-pan meal?

Salmon is hard to beat for a nourishing protein, and it complements a range of tasty sides. And the best part? It can all come together on a sheet pan. I’ve been making this mustard-roasted salmon with veggies whenever I’m craving something complex without the cleanup. Served with a zesty vinaigrette, like the lemon vinaigrette I mix up every Sunday, this recipe is hard to beat.

How to Make Mustard-Roasted Salmon & Veggies

 1. Prep the Veggies: Use your hands to toss the veggies in half the vinaigrette to coat evenly. Spread them on a sheet pan and roast at 400°F for about 30 minutes.
 2. Glaze the Salmon: Mix equal parts Dijon and brown sugar to create a quick, sweet, and tangy glaze and brush onto your salmon. Place salmon on the sheet pan with the veggies for the final 15 minutes of roasting.
 3. Make your Vinaigrette: Blend all of your ingredients together until they’re nice and creamy.
 4. Assemble a Salad: Toss together a simple salad with your choice of leafy greens and lots of parmesan.
 5. Serve & Enjoy: Plate it up, and dinner’s on the table!

Tips for the Best Salmon Ever

 • Use a hero ingredient (like Dijon mustard) in multiple ways to tie the meal together beautifully. It streamlines prep and packs the meal with an instant depth of flavor.
 • Choose a vinegar variation for your vinaigrette’s base to give your salad that acidic sharpness (if the dressing’s name didn’t give it away). If you don’t have ACV on hand, you can turn to rice or red wine vinegar.
 • When cooking salmon, you’re looking for an ideal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit. A meat thermometer is a great way to keep an eye on your salmon’s temperature while baking so that it doesn’t come out undercooked or dried out. I often cut my salmon filets in half to make the center of the salmon cook a bit faster.

how you can help with LA fires

Over the last few days hours, I’ve watched in disbelief as friends in LA have shared photos of neighborhoods burning, emergency evacuations, and devastatingly, many of their homes burning to the ground. This tragedy feels like nothing we’ve seen before—in just hours, thousands of people’s lives have been turned upside down as they’ve watched everything they own be completely destroyed. Homes, schools, supermarkets, entire neighborhoods destroyed, leaving families displaced and communities shattered.

As evacuation orders were announced, tens of thousands of people fled their homes for safety. Many left on foot with possessions and pets as roads became too crowded for travel. The Los Angeles County Fire Chief said there are insufficient resources to combat the flames. According to the chief, the 29 departments were “not prepared for this type of widespread disaster.”

I’m grateful for everyone who’s checked in on us—the fires are still several miles south of our house. But that worry pales in comparison to the helplessness I feel as I watch the devastation from miles away—a feeling many of you are experiencing as well. The things we can do to help right now are pray for safety, check in with loved ones who are affected, and donate however we’re able financially.

In most disaster scenarios, monetary donations are most helpful because organizations can buy and distribute the exact supplies needed. If you prefer giving physical items, check official lists first to ensure they are truly needed. I did a deep dive into the many different organizations who are mobilized to help first responders and those who have lost homes, and wanted to share a list here to make it as easy as possible to give.

Please send me others as you become aware of them. And if you’re able to, please consider giving to one of the organizations below:

Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation

There’s a massive shortage of equipment for LA’s firefighters, and this foundation provides the vital equipment that LAFD needs to fight fires and save lives.

American Red Cross Los Angeles Region

The Red Cross has opened emergency centers around the city for evacuees. They need cash donations to provide food, health services, clothing, and shelter to those who have been displaced.

Baby2Baby

Baby2Baby is providing critical items including diapers, food, formula and hygiene products for children and families who have lost their homes.

World Central Kitchen

WCK is on the ground providing immediate food and water needs to first responders and families forced to evacuate.

Canine Rescue Club

Providing displaced dogs with temporary housing, safe transport, medican care, and food. You can donate cash or sign up to foster a dog in need.

Direct Relief

Direct Relief is providing emergency medical resources and supplies to the communities affected by the fires. They’re working closely with local health centers and first responders.

The Strebe Family

Our former deputy editor and my dear friend Sacha lost their home in Altadena. She and her family poured their heart and soul into remodeling this home only to lose it. You can donate directly to help them rebuild here.

Library aesthetic living room

I recently returned to Edinburgh, Scotland, after 12 years away. I hadn’t been to this magical city since I was a college junior studying abroad there in 2012. Spending time visiting my old stomping grounds reinforced what a special, history-filled, place Edinburgh is, to say the least. (I’m already daydreaming about my next trip back!).

While the concept of dark academia wasn’t something that people talked about a decade ago, I firmly believe that Edinburgh is absolutely the capital of this aesthetic. The mixture of the university setting, historic buildings, tweed jackets, grand castle, and dimly-lit streets, just to name a few things, had me yearning to drop everything and relocate to Scotland. There, I’d surely put together the most charming flat full of moody Victorian pieces, rich, sumptuous fabrics, and plenty of leather-bound books.

How to Style the Library Aesthetic Look at Home

While such a move (most likely) isn’t in the cards for me, the good news is that any of us can replicate the library aesthetic in our own houses or apartments. Ahead, I’m going to show you how to do just that. Don’t blame me if you implement these decorating tips and become more of a homebody than ever—they sure are cozy!

moody dark academia aesthetic in edinburgh

Get Moody

Establishing a moody vibe is essential to nailing the dark academia aesthetic. One of the hotels I stayed in during my trip, 100 Princes Street, executed this perfectly. Their upstairs dining area is filled with pops of plaid, boasts multiple fireplaces, and includes worn-in leather chairs that look like they could have been plucked directly from a professor’s office. The nautical paintings in the room also play nicely to the library aesthetic and add a sense of timelessness to the room. Such a space truly is the perfect spot to sit back and sip a cup of tea or thumb through a book. The saturated tones make the room feel ultra cozy, like you’re being enveloped in a big hug.

Forgo the Plain White Walls

You’ll never find a dark academia style space that has plain white walls, nor will you find one with walls that are painted but bare. So bring on the deeply hued paint (maybe a deep blue or green, as pictured below!) or try some wallpaper. Finally, display all of the art! Now is the time to go all in with a gallery wall. Break things up by also hanging some mini mirrors or candle sconces, which will contribute to your desired look while adding visual interest. To save some money, you can weave in some digital downloads from Etsy that are easy to print out at home and often cost just a few dollars. Simply search “dark academia” on the site and you’ll be greeted with tons of options.

Make Your Space Layered, Not Cluttered

The dark academia aesthetic is all about a layered, lived-in look, but it’s important to note that these characteristics do not equal cluttered in a bad way! Yes, it’s more than okay to line an entire wall with books or display a collection of your favorite trinkets (or my personal favorite, bust sculptures) on a shelf. After all, it’s safe to say that dark academia isn’t really for minimalists.

That said, you will want to be sure to keep unsightly items like cords, piles of junk mail, and the like out of sight. This helps to preserve some of the magic that comes with dark academia—you should feel like you’re retreating to another time or place, and keeping reminders of everyday life strewed about won’t allow you to fully evoke that feeling.

Celebrate the Past

On a related note, as it pertains to accessories, think old, not new. Shopping at vintage and antique stores can be a great way to achieve the dark academia aesthetic, and you can definitely score some budget-friendly pieces that will play to this vision. Look for leather-bound books, sculptures and figurines, carved, ornate mirrors, plush armchairs (remember that you can recover anything with great bones), portrait and landscape paintings, and more. Now is not the time to go all in with contemporary pieces such as acrylic side tables or a bouclé sofa.

Shop the Library Aesthetic

Once you start shopping with the library aesthetic top of mind, you might be surprised at what stands out to you. Make a Pinterest board filled with dark academia spaces that inspire you and reference it as you pop from one store to another to help you stay focused!

daybreak luxury candle casa zuma - citrus, jasmine, and salty air

It’s a big week at Casa Zuma—and for me, as a founder. After spending over a year developing our first candle, “Daybreak,” it’s finally here. It’s funny for me to think back—since way before dreaming up the brand Casa Zuma, I always wanted to make a candle. I’ve been candle-obsessed for as long as I can remember, and I always thought it would be the ultimate creative project to make exactly the fragrance that I want my entire home to smell like. (That is, California citrus, blooming jasmine, and salty air.) I wanted a candle that’s intense enough to pack a punch, look gorgeous sitting on my coffee table, and be completely non-toxic and clean burning. And now, I’m proud to say that Daybreak checks every box.

Daybreak Candle

California citrus, blooming jasmine, and salty air—lighting Daybreak ignites your senses with the sun-soaked energy of morning. Our clean-burning coconut and soy wax candle is hand-poured in Los Angeles, with a vessel inspired by golden rays and designed by our friends at Indoek.

When I started the journey of creating this candle, I was determined to make something that felt like, well, not just another candle! As someone who considers herself a candle connoisseur, I’ve tried them all. I have my favorites, but let’s be honest—most luxury candles look pretty similar, and it’s rare that I discover one with a truly unique scent. Which is why I’m so excited about Daybreak—when you smell it, you’re going to feel that spark that happens when you’re experiencing something for the first time.

daybreak luxury candle casa zuma_how to be more mindful

For those of you wondering what goes into creating a candle, let me start by saying—way more than I ever imagined. I never dreamed this process would take over a year start to finish, but it was that important that we get it right. The first step was the fragrance. We worked with our scent developer in Los Angeles to imagine a fragrance that’s fresh and clean, citrusy with floral notes, and feels like sunshine. I brought her some of my favorite fragrances that had elements I wanted to pull into our candle, plus references that I’d collected from my travels through the years. The blooming jasmine takes me right back to St. Tropez in 2014. The lemon and oranges are inspired by our trips to Capri. And that salty air and sunrise feeling is straight from our time spent in Malibu.

After several iterations, we knew we’d found our scent. It was really important that we make a completely non-toxic product, so we settled on a blend of natural coconut & soy wax that’s free of parabens, phthalates and sulfates, and a 100% cotton wick that burns totally clean.

The next step was the design of the candle vessel and box. I wanted all aspects of this candle to feel really special, so we worked with our artist friends at Indoek to create a sun-bleached vessel with our signature Casa Zuma seaweed cutouts. Indoek’s work is all about coastal creative culture, and our finished design reminds me of golden hour and the warmth of California sunshine. After deciding on countless other details (sampling, testing, packaging, shipping, etc.) we finally had our first Daybreak sample in hand.

daybreak luxury candle casa zuma

My vision for Daybreak is a happy scent, one that ignites the sun-soaked energy of the best morning.

The fragrance notes:

 • California citrus
 • Lush jasmine petals
 • Wild cypress
 • Sun-soaked musk
 • Fresh earth

The candle facts

 • 60 hour burn time
 • 100% cotton wick
 • Cruelty-free and vegan
 • Non-toxic fragrances (free of parabens, phthalates and sulfates)

We also created an accompanying Daybreak playlist so you can truly awaken all the senses with the best vibes possible. Our candles are thoughtfully produced and hand-poured in Los Angeles, and our first run is a limited production batch of 500 pieces. They’re available now at Casa Zuma. I can’t wait for you to experience it (and tag me on IG if you get one!)

As someone who regularly tests recipes and also happens to live alone, I often find myself with the dilemma of having lots of extras. This isn’t a bad thing, of course. I’ve made friends with neighbors and always have treats to bring to the office. But sometimes, I just want to make something that’s not left hanging around my house for weeks. (When I developed this recipe a few months ago, I ate it every night for seven days straight.) I know I’m not alone in the struggle, so I’ve devised the ultimate small-batch banana nut muffins recipe. That’s right—these make a total of six muffins. You’re welcome.

The Case for Putting Nuts in Your Muffins

I’ve gone on record saying that I loathe nuts in my desserts. I don’t want walnuts in my brownies or chocolate chip cookies, butter pecan ice cream is a pass, and—hot take—I can’t handle a Snickers bar. The texture feels more like a nuisance than a way to enhance a treat. Maybe you’ll say I’m being extreme, but nuts are like land mines getting in the way of a fudgy brownie or fluffy cake.

The exception to this rule is putting the nuts on top of the dessert. Garnishing a cake with slivered almonds or a nutty crumble is my preferred method of utilizing nuts in baked goods. And that’s exactly what we’ve done here with this banana nut muffins recipe. We’re taking all the best parts of the banana nut muffin and adding a few tweaks to keep the texture and flavor top-notch.

Key Ingredients for these Banana Nut Muffins

 • Pecans. Substitute with whatever you have on hand. Walnuts or almonds are great alternatives.
 • Oats. Optional, but I like playing on the slightly nutty flavor of oats for the topping.
 • Egg. Just one! Remember: small-batch.
 • Greek yogurt. Yogurt adds moisture while also helping with the leavening. If you don’t usually have yogurt on hand, freeze yogurt in ice cube trays and store the cubes in a freezer-safe bag. Simply thaw and use as needed.
 • Olive oil. Prioritize the good stuff in this recipe—you’ll taste it in these muffins.
 • Tahini. A little untraditional, but I love the savory and slightly nutty flavor that complements this recipe’s sweeter ingredients.
 • Maple syrup. I’m not a fan of super sweet treats, but maple syrup adds dimension.
 • Miso. If you’ve caught on, I love using savory ingredients in my baking. A little miso lifts all the flavors.
 • Banana. One banana is all you need. That random banana sitting on your counter? It’s the perfect contestant.
 • Flour. All-purpose for these muffins.
 • Baking Soda and Powder. Both keep these muffins light and fluffy.
 • Salt. If you’re not salting your sweets, start yesterday.
 • Cinnamon and Nutmeg. These warming spices enhance the muffins’ flavor without overpowering the banana.
 • Vanilla. Lately, I’ve considered vanilla optional in my recipes. (It can be so expensive!) Use it if you have it, but don’t fret if you don’t!
easy banana nut muffin recipe

Tips for Making Banana Nut Muffins

A few tips and tricks to ensure success.

 1. Let ingredients come to room temperature. This will drastically impact the final result.
 2. Mash the banana on its own, then add to the wet ingredients. Not only does this ensure an even distribution in the batter, but it also brings out the banana’s moisture.
 3. For bakery-style and domed muffins, fill your muffin tin to the top. I also recommend using parchment squares instead of regular liners as this will help create the rounded domed shape. This recipe works with regular muffin liners, but you might notice a bit more spreading on top of the muffin tin. Using large parchment squares also keeps the crumble in place.
 4. Gently press the crumble into the top of the batter. This ensures that the crumble will stick to the muffin instead of falling off during baking.

How to Store and Freeze Leftovers

These banana nut muffins are incredibly easy to store. (That is, if you end up with leftovers at all!) After letting the muffins cool completely, wrap muffins individually in beeswax or plastic wrap, then place them into a larger freezer bag. To reheat, remove individual muffins from the freezer and keep them in the fridge overnight. Alternatively, unwrap and toss muffins in the oven to thaw at 350 F for a few minutes.

Description

An easy, small-batch banana nut muffin recipe that yields six fluffy and moist muffins.

Ingredients

Units

For the crumble:

 • 60 grams pecans, chopped (1/2 cup)
 • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
 • 1 tablespoon rolled oats
 • 1 tablespoon flour
 • 1 tablespoon olive oil
 • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the muffins:

 • 1 egg, room temperature
 • 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt
 • 1/4 cup olive oil
 • 2 tablespoons tahini
 • 5 tablespoons maple syrup (just over 1/4 cup, 3oz)
 • 1 teaspoon miso
 • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
 • 1 large banana (1/2 cup mashed)
 • 120 grams flour
 • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
 • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
 • 1/4 teaspoon salt
 • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
 • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

 1. Prep the crumble. Add all of the ingredients to a small bowl and toss together until everything is evenly coated in oil and distributed. Set aside.
 2. Preheat oven to 400 F. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with six liners, evenly spacing them out.
 3. Make the batter. In a large mixing bowl, add the egg, Greek yogurt, olive oil, tahini, maple syrup, miso, and vanilla. Whisk until thoroughly combined and smooth.
 4. Mash the banana until very well mashed. Add to the batter.
 5. In a small bowl, add the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Sift together to ensure everything is evenly combined, then add to the wet ingredients. Using a spatula, fold and combine the wet and dry ingredients until the batter just comes together.
 6. Using a small cookie scoop, evenly divide the batter amongst the 6 muffin liners. You’ll want the batter to go almost to the top of the liner.
 7. Add a tablespoon of crumble over the batter in the muffin pan and gently press the crumble into the top of the batter.
 8. Bake at 400 F for 18-19 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
 9. Remove from oven and let cool in pan for about five minutes, then finish cooling on a wire rack.
 10. Enjoy!

If you’re looking for a satisfying and healthy breakfast or snack option—that also happens to be grain-free—this granola is for you. I’ve been meal-prepping this exact grain-free granola recipe every Sunday for the past several months, and it’s so wholesome and delicious, I go through the entire batch most weeks. Packed with a variety of seeds, nuts, and coconut flakes, it’s perfect for those following Paleo, grain-free, gluten-free, or Keto diets—or simply anyone seeking a nutritious start to their day.

Why Eat Grain-Free

I’m working on a post that deep dives into why I’m currently following a grain-free diet (my reason is completely due to the gut health issues that have plagued me for years!) While grains are certainly not “bad” and can even be a really healthy part of some people’s diets, there are a variety of reasons why someone may choose to eliminate or cut back on grains.

 1. Lower Carb Content: Traditional granola typically contains grains like oats, which can be high in carbohydrates. Our grain-free version cuts down on carbs, making it a great choice for those following a low-carb or ketogenic diet.
 2. Gluten-Free: Going grain-free means avoiding gluten, making this granola suitable for individuals with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.
 3. Nutrient-Rich Ingredients: Our recipe features nutrient-dense ingredients like seeds, nuts, and coconut flakes, providing essential vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats.
 4. Blood Sugar Control: With no grains or added sugars, this granola won’t cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, making it a smart choice for those monitoring their glucose.

This grain-free granola recipe is so simple, I don’t even follow a recipe when I make it on the weekend. Essentially, you take coconut flake cereal (I like this one from Thrive Market), a bunch of seeds, and a bunch of nuts. You spread them out on a baking sheet, then toss in a “wet” mixture of applesauce and egg white until evenly coated (these take the place of the sugar and oil that most granola recipes are loaded with!) Then, you bake until golden brown and crunchy.

My Favorite Ways to Eat Grain-Free Granola

Now that you’ve prepared this healthy grain-free granola, here are some delightful ways to enjoy it throughout the week:

 • Serve with nut milk and fresh berries for a refreshing breakfast.
 • Top your whole milk Greek yogurt or cottage cheese with a generous sprinkle of this crunchy goodness.
 • Get creative by using it as a salad topping for an unexpected and delightful crunch.
 • Satisfy your snack cravings by munching on a handful of this granola all on its own.

This granola is not only a healthier alternative to traditional granola—it’s also a versatile treat that fits into just about any diet (except nut-free!) Make a batch on Sunday, store it in a mason jar in the freezer, and enjoy it throughout the week in countless delicious ways.

Easy Grain-Free Granola

 • Author: Camille Styles
 • Total Time: 50 minutes
 • Yield: 6 cups granola
 • Diet: Gluten Free

Description

I make this easy grain-free granola recipe every Sunday, pop it in the freezer, then enjoy it all week on top of yogurt, fruit, or by the handful as a snack.

Ingredients

Units
 • 3 cups Coconut Flakes cereal (I buy the one from Thrive Market—look for one with the main ingredient organic coconut meat)
 • 1 1/2 cups seeds of choice—I mix sunflower, pumpkin, and hemp seeds
 • 1 1/2 cups raw nuts of choice—slivered almonds and chopped walnuts are my picks
 • 1 egg white
 • 1 small container applesauce
 • 1/2 teaspoon salt
 • Cinnamon, to taste

Instructions

 1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
 2. In a small bowl, mix together egg white, applesauce, salt, and cinnamon.
 3. Spread out the coconut flakes cereal, seeds, and nuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Pour the egg white mixture over, use your hands to toss together until everything is moistened, then spread out in an even layer.
 4. Bake for 20 – 30 minutes until starting to get toasty. Flip the granola and stir it around, then bake for about 15 more minutes until both sides are starting to turn golden brown.
 5. Remove from oven and let cool—the granola will become even crispier as it cools.

Notes

 • Feel free to swap an equal amount of any nuts or seeds—I’ve used flaxseeds, chia seeds, sesame seeds, pecans, and pistachios all with great success!
 • You can also use 1/4 cup canned puréed pumpkin in place of the applesauce. I love to do this in the fall with a pinch of pumpkin pie spice for “pumpkin spice” granola!

The hardest working rooms in the house.

When it comes to a well-designed home, we usually give credit to the obvious: A beautiful living room, a functional kitchen, or an inviting bedroom are the likely suspects. But what really creates a sense of day-to-day ease and beauty are the hardworking areas in between—those spaces that get little applause but do the heavy lifting. Imagine having a laundry room with dedicated places for folding and ironing, or a well-organized mudroom where there’s a designated spot to stash stray shoes and bags. Creating such areas was paramount for me when designing my Malibu home. So, I called in the experts at California Closets to help me design customized spaces that would enhance my every day with optimized storage to complement my coastal aesthetic.

Function, ease, and beauty were my top priorities when I began working on my primary bedroom closet, laundry room, and mudroom. When considering these hardworking spaces of my home, I envision a feeling of calm, serenity, and deep satisfaction from knowing everything has its place. These spaces can now bring ease to how our family functions.

California Closets: The Beauty of Tailor-Made Design

The intersection of beauty and organization is where California Closets meets every client. A pioneer in premium space management, the company delivers custom organizational solutions for any and every corner of the home in a way that is uniquely personal. No detail is too obscure. No design request too high. There’s an emphasis on collaboration to make every space feel like its own. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, the tailor-made design pays off for years to come. Because homeowners are looking for ways to enhance existing spaces, design consultants often see untapped potential and come up with ideas to optimize every inch, which adds to the overall value of the home.

Designing a Home Down to the Details

It was this detail-rich precision that spoke to me for my Malibu home, which I’ll be sharing with my husband and two children. I’ve learned from experience in my previous homes that the depth of a drawer, the placement of a handle, and the height of a cabinet can make all the difference when it comes to the efficiency of a space. These spaces in our beach house have a modest footprint, and we’re expecting a lot out of them!

The mudroom, for instance, will be the spot to “hang up wetsuits, kick off sandy shoes, and store beach gear and sunscreen,” while also providing garage and guest storage. Every inch matters, and I knew from working with California Closets on previous projects that their professional design consultants are geniuses when it comes to maximizing every bit of usable space and making a small area function like one that’s much larger.

Attention to Aesthetics

As efficient as every organizational detail is, the aesthetics are equally as critical. To honor my pursuit of a serene and calm vibe inspired by the rocky beaches, sand, water, mountains, and grasses of Malibu, the California Closets team considered every touch, from the colors to the metals, as part of its focus on a palette of carefully selected finishes and accessories.

Our Malibu abode celebrates what a truly beautiful home needs to be: a textured, considered, warm space to live, anchored by timeless design and hardworking organization spaces—which deserve all the praise.

Do we create trends, or do they already exist, waiting to be realized? It’s a lofty thought I sometimes obsess over. Case in point: I’d already been thinking of the home décor trends of 2023 when I was wandering through Marigold, a perfect floral boutique in San Francisco, and a chunky terra cotta-colored checkered wool throw caught my eye. Are checks chic? I wondered. Barely a week later interior designer Amy Pigliacampo offered me her 2023 design forecast, unprompted. “The check pattern is evolving,” the interior designer exclaimed. “It started super high contrast but is softening into a more tone-on-tone look that enables this motif to be more versatile and less trendy… showing up in rugs, textiles, and accessories in fresh hues.”

Was this proof that the checked trend was waiting to be seen or a product of our making? Who’s to know? But one thing is for sure: Checks are one of several home décor trends of 2023 that are an extension of some stylish 2022 home looks. From living room looks to kitchen updates, bold design is big right now. So here, Pigliacamp and a slew of other talented interior designers offer their take on what to keep, introduce, and amplify in our homes for the year ahead.

#1: Curved Edges

Soft rounded corners were huge in 2022—and they’re here to stay, says both Katie Labourdette-Martinez and Olivia Wahler of Hearth Homes Interiors. The same can be said for grand arches.

What’s to love: There’s always room for 90-degree angles, so why not include some easier turns? Rounded mirrors, curvy headboards, and oval coffee tables add a definitive femininity and flow to a room.

Get the look: Go big, small, or in-between with the curves. Opt for rounded mirrors, oval side tables, and even circular printed art pieces.

#2: Vintage Wares

“Antique and vintage finds, as well as enhanced accessories, are making a big debut in 2023, says Hayley English of Hayley English Interiors. “These small, yet powerful pieces are key to creating a sense of nostalgia, familiarity, and comfort within the home.”

What’s to love: Incorporating vintage and antique pieces allow you to showcase local artisans and pay homage to beautiful designs from the past, adds English.

Get the look: English suggests going for accessories and accent pieces with weathered finishes, large antique pieces, and vintage plates, framed pressed flowers or antique suzani fabrics for the walls.

#3: Oceanic Colors

Sara Malek Barney of BANDD/DESIGN is excited for the 2023 design landscape to have ample “rich textured hues” of the likes of deep navy and deep greens. “More people are moving out of their neutral comfort zone and getting bolder with selections,” the interior designer says.

What’s to love: Barney says these deeper shades are an ode to opening up creativity in our homes. It’s also a fresh take on color. “I love that it’s not the same white and grey that’s been trending the last few years,” she adds.

Get the look: “If color is intimidating, start small with accents or accessories, suggests Barney. This includes colorful green or blue pillows or throws, or punchy art on the walls. If you want to go big, look to blue tiles for the bath.

#4: Neutral Bouclé

Admittedly, this one surprises me, as we’ve been seeing this texture for a while. Still, it adds a warmth to a room—and Pigliacamp is seeing it come around in more muted and neutral colors, as well as the classic off-white.

What’s to love: No matter the style of a room, bouclé always lends a coziness that works.

Get the look: The great thing about bouclé is that it only takes one punch to leave a mark. This means you can start with a single throw pillow or rug to transform a look. But for more interest, consider a bouclé throw to drape over the back of a couch.

Threshold™ Oversized Teddy Bouclé Square Throw Pillow

u003cpu003eOur love of bouclé will never die, but in 2023, we’ll be looking for creative and subtle ways to bring this cozy trend into our décor. Enter: This affordable throw pillow.u003c/pu003e

u003cpu003eWho wouldn’t want to cozy up with something this soft? This throw’s natural hue grounds and warms up any space.u003c/pu003e

#5: Saturated Hues

For 2023, rich colors and dark wood tones are “a lovely ode to the classics,” believe Labourdette-Martinez and Olivia Wahler. White always has a place, but these richer hues are commanding more attention this year.

What’s to love: “Different industries are creating a fresh take on history and we think people are craving a change from an overly fresh, bright look and seeking a more timeless, charismatic vibe,” the design duo adds.

Get the look: “If you’re daring enough to make a bit of a commitment, wallpaper can give you a completely new space,” say Martinez and Olivia Wahler. “Same thing with paneling; there are great DIY videos out there to give you inspiration and show you affordable ways to add that touch of timelessness to a room.” Looking for less of a commitment? Paint an accent wall in a jewel tone, or aim for a dark wood coffee table to lend some gravitas.

#6: Dark Academia

Extended from the above, this look leans into rich woods and cozy library-type vibes. Think of ample books, leather chairs, reading nooks, and dimmed lighting.

What’s to love: “A warm, dark studious place in a home evokes a deep peace and calm in everyone,” believes Pigliacamp, who feels this may stem from “our psyche of being safe in our cave—or there’s possibly the influence the Harry Potter series has had on us.”

Get the look: If you leaned into leather, which was a beloved home décor look of 2022, you can continue this into 2023. Dark academia calls for all that is rich, literary, and storied.

#7: Quirky, Slightly Weird, and Oh-So-Personal

While I’m loving all the home décor trends of 2023, Liz Lidgett’s insight has me smiling the widest. Let your design freak flag fly this year, says the owner of Liz Lidgett Gallery. The best way to do this is with art and meaningful home pieces. “Go for the weird art, the art that makes you laugh, the art that means something to you.” Now that’s décor and life wisdom to live by.

What’s to love: “We’re getting away from OTC—over the couch—art that just matches,” adds Lidgett. Instead, we’re leaning into what matters, which are things that evoke meaning. “I want to see personalities shine through so that when I walk into your home I think: No one else could have come up with this amazingness.”

Get the look: Put down Instagram and Architectural Digest, take a walk through a gallery or nature, and see what organically inspires you. Then pull those colors, looks, shapes, and sentiments into your home. And listen to Lidgett and buy that weird print that’s calling you at the flea market!

My Go-To Meal - Chitra Agrawal Brooklyn Delhi Squash Soup

As much as we love to see what our favorite foodies make when they want to “wow” their guests, you know what’s even more interesting? Learning what dishes they whip up when they’re at home on an average weeknight. These recipes are usually quicker with fewer ingredients and are the perfect inspo to answer the question, “What should I make for dinner?” whenever it strikes. To satisfy our curiosity, our series, My Go-To Meal, asks chefs and foodies we love to spill the easy recipes that are on constant rotation at their house. Next up, Brooklyn Delhi’s Chitra Agrawal shares the easy curried roasted winter squash soup she makes on busy weeknights.

When you think about the condiments aisle at the grocery store, what do you think of? Ketchup? Mustard? Mayo? Fine, that’s all true and has historically been the majority of the shelf, but over the last few years, an incredible group of creators and entrepreneurs have started inching their way into the aisle with offerings that make me absolutely giddy (they have me jumping up and down in front of the shelf—true story!).

The first time I saw Brooklyn Delhi on the shelf at Whole Foods I had to take a pause because I couldn’t believe it. Achaar and Korma sauce in my grocery store? Since then, I’ve been a huge fan of the founder, Chitra Agrawal and the work she’s doing in creating products that highlight Indian culture through food. The first line of Brooklyn Delhi products that launched in 2014 focused on an Indian pantry staple called achaar, sometimes referred to as Indian pickle. When I tell y’all that my Mom can’t live without achaar, I’m not even joking. Achaar (pronounced ah-char; which translates to pickled in Hindi) is a flavor-packed condiment made from fruits and veggies and spices. My mom will add a little bit to whatever she’s eating to give it a spicy, sour, sweet, savory bite, most specifically, she’ll eat it with parathas or with whatever sabzi is on the menu for dinner. Achaar is eaten with rice, dal, curry or yogurt, but what I love about Brooklyn Delhi’s approach is highlighting how achaar can also pair well with sandwiches, burgers, eggs, mixed into bowls, soups, noodles, with cheese and crackers, and so much more. That’s the beauty of food right? Being able to use different dishes that traditionally fit into one cuisine, and discovering ways to incorporate them into others (only to find they fit just as well over there!).

I was so excited to chat with Chitra and feature one of her go-to recipes as we enter the autumn season. So, keep scrolling to grab the recipe for this delicious curried roasted squash soup. You’re welcome!

My Go-To Meal - Chitra Agrawal Brooklyn Delhi Squash Soup

What is your go-to meal, Chitra?

Curried Roasted Winter Squash Soup, especially during fall and winter.

Yum! How often do you make this soup?

The amazing thing about this recipe is that I can make it weekly and not get sick of it because it’s so versatile depending on the squash I have on hand (i.e. butternut, acorn, kabocha, delicata if it’s still fall, etc.). I also flavor it in several different ways using my simmer sauces from Brooklyn Delhi. One week I will roast the squash and blend it up with coconut milk and my Cashew Butter Masala sauce and the next with my Coconut Cashew Korma sauce.

Sounds delicious, I love y’alls Cashew Butter Masala. What is your favorite thing about this recipe? Why is it your go-to?

I love this recipe for so many reasons. First of all it’s delicious yet healthy without much effort. The majority of the recipe is inactive cooking time—like when you’re roasting the squash in the oven—so I can multi-task easily and do this part of the recipe in advance, making it a super quick weekday recipe. Since I already have caramelized onions, garlic, ginger and spices in my simmer sauces there’s no chopping, fumbling around with spice jars or waiting by the pot for the flavors to develop which is a win for a weeknight meal. And if you roast the squash ahead of time, you can pull the final recipe together in one pot.

Since launching, Brooklyn Delhi has attracted the attention of some of the world’s leading food critics and can be found online and at your local Whole Foods grocery store.

My Go-To Meal - Chitra Agrawal Brooklyn Delhi Squash Soup

Any special tools we need to have on hand to make this recipe?

This recipe requires a sheet pan, a pot and an immersion blender, or blender.

What are the stand-out ingredients that make this unique?

Winter squash is already so flavorful when roasted (especially when in-season) but I think the addition of warming Indian spices make this soup truly unique and delicious.

What are some ingredient swaps that you either use if you don’t have something on hand or for someone who might be dairy- gluten-free, etc.?

The recipe is naturally vegan and gluten-free. If I don’t have squash, I have made this recipe with sweet potato and sometimes if I have some cooked red lentils, I’ll add those in as well for more protein. I like to serve the soup with plain yogurt and it’s also delicious with coconut yogurt or sliced avocado on top for a dairy free version.

What is a cooking hack you use in this recipe that we should all know about?

My simmer sauces are the main hack but I also just love this no fuss way of roasting winter squash—slice it down the middle lengthwise, spoon out the seeds and roast it skin side up. When the squash is cooked, you just scoop it out of the skin and if the skin is thin enough, I just use the whole squash. Roast the squash until you see some caramelization because that gives the soup more depth of flavor and sweetness. This method really beats the heck out of peeling and cutting the squash into cubes. A major time-saver is roasting the squash the day before.

What ingredients do you always have on hand in the kitchen for recipes like this and others?

A winter squash or sweet potatoes, Brooklyn Delhi simmer sauces, coconut milk, a crunchy topping like sev (crispy Indian chickpea flour strands), or roasted seeds (pepita or sunflower). I like to top the soup with a little plain yogurt and chopped cilantro too. I love dunking crusty sourdough bread in this soup.

Thanks for sharing this recipe, anything else you’d like to share?

The recipe is mild enough for my kids so I serve the soup as is for them—an easy meal that the kids love is always a win. To amp up the heat for myself, I add my Tomato or Roasted Garlic Achaar.

Whether you’re dealing with postpartum hair loss, having serious bangs-regret, or simply want to help boost hair growth, finding the right hair care routine is crucial. And while no two issues are the same, there are plenty of truly effective products on the market that will help get your hair it’s strongest and healthiest. We tapped Trey Gillen, hairstylist and creative director of education at SACHAJUAN to give us the scoop on the absolute best hair growth shampoos and conditioners available. Apparently, glossy, long, and strong locks are only a wash away!

Finding a shampoo and conditioner that works with your hair’s texture is absolutely vital. Once you have an understanding of your hair’s specific needs, it can be easier to look for products that will help you achieve your goals. Even those who are historically low maintenance about their hair will notice a big difference after investing in high-quality products that deliver visible results. If you aren’t sure what your specific needs are, don’t hesitate to ask your dermatologist or hairstylist for guidance!

Gillen’s biggest piece of advice? Never skimp on quality products if you’re dealing with a real hair issue. High-quality active ingredients are the most effective and will make a huge difference in your hair’s appearance. So, keep reading to discover more of his tips and the best hair growth shampoos and conditioners.

Trey Gillen

Gillen is the creative director of education at SACHAJUAN and hairstylist at Ceron Hair Studio in Houston, Texas.

One of the biggest things we can do to improve hair quality and health is to not over-cleanse hair. Less is more! Gillen recommends limiting washes to two or three times a week, using high-grade hair products. This way, the quality of the active ingredients will be higher and less likely to cause issues to the scalp and hair.

If the thought of not washing your hair daily gives you the shivers, then you may want to look into trying a cleansing cream—a cleanser that essentially performs like a conditioner, with no suds or lather at all. When it comes to conditioner, he cautions that cheap conditioners can contain ingredients like silicone which coat your hair and give you a false sense of health because it makes the hair feel shiny and smooth. True higher quality ingredients can really repair the hair structure from the inside out and also help with generating healthy hair follicles for hair growth.

Gillem’s hair growth tips

 • Use an overnight hair cream or serum to nourish and repair your hair while you sleep.
 • Look for ingredients that promote a healthy scalp like menthol, ginger, and rosemary.
 • Take biotin daily.
 • Limit hair washing.
Riley Blanks

Take your vitamins

Alongside common hair growth agents like vitamin A, vitamin C, Biotin, Zinc, and B-12, Gillen tells us that magnesium and iron are also extremely important. Magnesium plays an essential role in follicle hair growth promotion. When the body has insufficient iron, it no longer has the ability to repair and grow cells, which can lead to hair loss.

Look for the following ingredients in the best hair growth shampoo and conditioners:

 • Biotin
 • Niacin
 • Caffeine
 • Minoxidil
 • Ketoconazole
 • Rosemary oil
 • Lavender oil
camille styles_beachy waves

Avoid these ingredients:

Sulfates. These are the main cleansing agent in most shampoos—suds and lather are the giveaway. Sulfates strip the hair and scalp of vital oils and nutrients.

Parabens. You can usually find these in water-based shampoos and conditioners since they help prevent bacteria growth in bottles. While the CDC reports that human health effects from environmental exposure to low levels of parabens are unknown, limited studies have shown the endocrine activity of parabens and implications for potential risks to human health including the body’s hormone regulation. Fluctuating hormones are the main cause of hair loss so if you’re concerned, it might be something you want to avoid.

Phthalates. This chemical is a type of petroleum that makes plastics more flexible and durable. It also makes fragrances last longer, which is why it’s used in a number of health and beauty products. Despite their versatility, phthalates are common endocrine disruptors. As if that weren’t bad enough, a recent study found that phthalates may be responsible for killing 100,000 Americans prematurely each year.

It can be tricky to find these in the ingredient list, so look for “synthetic fragrance” or “perfume.” As a general rule of thumb, try to opt for products that say “synthetic fragrance-free” or “phthalate-free.”

Silicones. These are often used on both shampoos and conditioners to give hair a sleek, shiny look. They coat and cover each strand in a protective film, locking out humidity and locking moisture in. The flipside, however, is that this can also block beneficial ingredients from penetrating the hair. It also weighs hair down, making it look limp and stringy and since most silicones aren’t water-soluble which can result in a hard-to-remove layer of buildup over time.

The 15 Best Fall Nail Colors to Mix It Up This Season https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-fall-nail-colors/ https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-fall-nail-colors/#comments Mon, 04 Oct 2021 10:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=157562

Time to lean into some darker hues.

The post The 15 Best Fall Nail Colors to Mix It Up This Season appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

It can be difficult to step out of one’s nail polish comfort zone. Personally, there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t have Essie Licorice on my hands or toes. But lately, I’ve been craving a little variety! And there’s no better time to lean into all things chic than the fall. So regardless of whether you’re stuck in a rut or simply know what you like, it’s time to mix it up a bit with some of the best fall nail colors.

Autumn is the perfect time to embrace those sexy, darker, muted hues. There’s no better excuse to embrace your goth side, albeit on a very small scale! But that’s what’s so fun about nail polish. It’s an incredibly low-stakes way to experiment with new colors and trends. So, get out your manicure kit because Jennifer Howard-Brown from The Ten Spot is sharing the best fall nail colors along with some of the biggest trends you’ll be seeing this season. It’s time to carve a little space for yourself.

Jennifer Howard-Brown

Howard-Brown is the owner of THE TEN SPOT salon in Austin, Texas.

Keep scrolling for more fall nail trends:

1. Gradient nails

This fall is going to be all about gradient nails in neutral colors like gray or brown, with each successive nail in a different shade of the same color family. It gives the hand a cool paint swatch card effect.

2. Wine + sparkle

The combination of deep rich colors with a sparkle topcoat is going to be everywhere this season. Think wine, navy, or even dark green with a pop of sparkle on all or just a single nail.

3. Fancy French

Inverted and colored tips take the french mani to a new level. An inverted French is essentially trading out the traditional white tip for modern half-triangles that give a more angular tip. Colored tips are a fresh and easy way to reinvent the French mani. Who says it has to be pink with white tips? Howard-Brown invites you to try a neutral pink like OPI Bubble Bath for the base with navy inverted tips!

4. Modern neutrals

Simple dots or subtle Xs elevate a basic manicure to something creative and chic. For example, Howard-Brown explains, a nude base with three rose gold dots down the nail adds a subtle wow factor.

5. Round and Almond-shaped nails

Howard-Brown was quick to note that even nail shape trends have shifted. Short, round nails are in, as opposed to a more squoval shape. Almond-shaped nails are also really popular, especially if you have a little length to work with, or with the help of a buildable gel.

Read on for Howard-Brown’s picks for the best fall nail colors:

OPI Black Onyx

Dark, saturated colors are really popular this fall, and if black is your shade of choice then this dark shade is as good as it gets.

OPI Black Onyx, $9.59

The Ten Spot Beauty You Up?

This sexy shade is the darkest blue velvet with a hint of purple.

The Ten Spot Beauty You Up?, $11

OPI Stay Off The Lawn

How gorgeous is this deep, lush green nail lacquer?

OPI Stay Off My Lawn, $10.50

OPI Mimosas for Mr. & Mrs.

This is a lovely, subtle, sophisticated shade. It’s absolutely timeless.

OPI Mimosas for Mr. & Mrs., $10.50

The Ten Spot Beauty Thirsty

This hydrating nail treatment doubles as the perfect sheer shade, so your nails look as good as they feel.

The Ten Spot Beauty Thirsty, $11

Essie Wicked

I’m a longtime fan of this deep, dark, sinister red shade.

Essie Wicked, $9

OPI Berlin There Done That

Prepare yourself for an explosion of gray and greige polish this season.

OPI Berlin There Done That, $9.59

Essie Courture Tailored by Twilight

This romantic, deep burgundy shade is a great alternative for those who want to go darker than a red but don’t want to leap into black.

Essie Courture Tailored by Twilight, $11.50

OPI Less Is Norse

This polish shapeshifts as both a rich navy and an ultra-dark purple depending on how the light catches it.

OPI Less Is Norse, $9.59

OPI Alpine Snow

A chic white shade stands out beautifully against a muted, darker palette.

OPI Alpine Snow, $9.59

OPI Lincoln Park After Dark

This almost-black shade of purple is especially elegant.

OPI Lincoln Park After Dark, $9.59

Chanel Le Vernis Longwear Nail Colour Vamp

Want to wear a dark, broody shade but need a little sparkle? Look no further than Vamp!

Chanel Le Vernis Longwear Nail Colour Vamp, $28

Few things remind me more of summer than the smell of good food on a grill. Burning charcoal takes me back to gatherings at the lake, Friday night burger nights, and Father’s Day ribs. But why make grilling a special occasion? There are plenty of healthy BBQ recipes out there that can make grilling out a nightly thing. Both my dad and my brother-in-law have a burning passion for grilling (see what I did there?)—my brother-in-law’s groom’s cake was even made to look like a Big Green Egg grill. My family is always trying out new recipes and new grilling techniques. I’m a fan of all things smoky and charred, so getting creative with grilling veggies, fish, and chicken is a must.

So, for your next barbecue, weekend dinner, or summer lunch, try out one of these light and healthy BBQ recipes that don’t skimp out on flavor.

Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Chimichurri

Grilled Pork Tenderloin With Chimichurri by The Modern Proper

This is one of my family’s favorite recipes to grill. Pork tenderloin is surprisingly just as lean as skinless chicken breasts, and the dry rub in this recipe gives it so much flavor without hours of marinating. The chimichurri sauce is also 0 carbs and adds a fresh, bright, summery flavor to the meal.

Grilled Salmon and Corn

Cedar Plank Salmon and Corn With Serrano-Butter by The Defined Dish

Salmon is rich in Omega-3s, protein, B vitamins, and so much more, making it one of the best healthy BBQ recipes. Grilling it on the cedar planks adds so much flavor and the serrano butter is a must

Recipe for Poulet Provencal

Chicken Provencal Skewers from Camille Styles

Chicken skewers are a great way to grill something a bit lighter than red meat while still getting your daily dose of protein.

Healthy BBQ recipes

Grilled Flank Steak With Cilantro Balsamic Marinade by Against All Grain

With fewer calories and more protein, flank steak is one of the healthiest cuts of beef. The cilantro balsamic marinade really takes this recipe over the edge. Plus, the leftovers are great on a salad.

Orange-Chili Glazed Pork Tenderloin with Carrot Pesto & Grilled Carrots

Orange-Chili Glazed Pork Tenderloin With Carrot Pesto and Grilled Carrots from Camille Styles

The orange-chili glaze on the pork perfectly complements the sweetness of the carrots. It’s a creative way to utilize some of our favorite ingredients of the season. You’ll definitely be coming back to this recipe time after time.

Grilled Eggplant With Chimichurri from Foodie Crush

This recipe is another amazing use of chimichurri. Sure, this grilled eggplant and chimichurri dish could easily work as a side dish but it is so delicious it can absolutely stand on its own as the main dish.

Healthy BBQ recipes

Grilled Corn and Avocado With Feta Dressing by Sue Li for NY Times Cooking

This salad is described as “summer on a plate” and is definitely one of the healthier ways to utilize your grill this summer. It’s packed with grilled corn, avocado, and jalapenos with a creamy feta cheese dressing that is to die for.

Grilled Veggies and Feta

Griddled Vegetables & Feta With Tabbouleh by Jamie Oliver

Another great meatless healthy BBQ recipe, this feta dish gives the TikTok pasta a run for its money. It’s perfect for Meatless Monday served with some grilled flatbread. You essentially grill a whole block of feta with different veggies and mix it all up with some creamy tabbouleh. YUM.

Healthy BBQ recipes

Grilled Fish Tacos by Bon Appétite

Fish tacos always give me major summer feels, but these grilled fish tacos are something else. The charred tortillas make them the perfect health BBQ dish and are great for large groups, as you can set out all the ingredients and have guests make their own tacos!

Healthy BBQ recipes

Spinach Avocado Chicken Burgers by Unbound Wellness

Who doesn’t love grilling burgers? These Spinach Avocado Chicken Burgers are perfect for a good old-fashioned burger night, but are leaner and packed with protein and veggies. Chicken burgers have a bad rep for being boring, but with the spinach and avocado mayo that this recipe recommends, these are far from bland.

burrata and tomato pasta

Pinterest simultaneously hosts my bucket list, my dream home, my closet goals, and my meal plan. When I have a haircut coming up, I’m on Pinterest picking out a style. When I’m planning a vacation, I’m pinning my way to the dreamiest spots. But most commonly, when I’ve drawn a blank on what to cook, I track down the best Pinterest recipes that will excite my tastebuds. As someone new to cooking, it always helps when I know that a recipe is well-liked and, well, fool-proof.

I love finding a recipe that looks gorgeous on a plate, has a flavor combination that I wouldn’t normally think of, and is manageable to make.

I love watching cooking shows but often times the recipes can overwhelm me. The recipes on Pinterest however, are almost always achievable for people like me.

Best Cheese and Charcuterie Board for Spring Picnic - Grazing Table

As you know, we are major foodies at Camille Styles HQ (peep the actual photo of us snacking mid-shoot). Our meetings can turn into 30-minute discussions on the best vegan cheese or our go-to brunch spot, which is what inspired us to find out what recipes you’re loving right now. Well, the people have spoken: these are the recipes that blew up on Pinterest

Lemon Ricotta Pound Cake Recipe is the perfect weekend baking project

Recipe Title: Lemon Ricotta Poundcake

Why We Love It: This poundcake is a summertime staple that satisfies your sweet tooth, while still being light and fresh. Making poundcakes can seem intimidating, but this one is surprisingly simple. I always appreciate recipes that include both store-bought and homemade alternatives, and while I usually see store-bought ingredients as a time-saver, this is an exception. Homemade ricotta cheese is way easier than you’d think and makes all the difference—especially with instructions like these. Finish the cake off with candied lemon slices and simple icing and you’ll understand why Pinterest blew up this gorgeous recipe.

Hero Ingredient: Betty Lou’s homemade ricotta cheese… don’t skip this step.

Lime-y Chicken Tacos with Jicama, Mint, Carrots, and Chipotle Aioli

Recipe Title: Limey Chicken Tacos With Jicama, Carrot, and Avocado

Why We Love It: Mexican Food Night comes around more than once a week for me, and this taco recipe is the perfect addition to my rotation. Sometimes I get distracted by queso and chips and forget to get my veggies in, which is why I love the addition of jicama and carrots in this recipe. Basic, but lime is one of my favorite flavors (I put it on almost everything) so these tacos already won me over with the title. The ingredients yield the perfect bite: a little bit of tang, some protein, a crunch, and a cream. What more could you wish for?

Hero Ingredient: Chipotle aioli. *Que the mouthwatering*

tuna nicoise toast recipe

Recipe Title: Tuna Nicoise Toast

Why We Love It: Toasted crusty bread spread with kale pesto, rough-mashed avocado, crisp cucumber slices, rich and garlicky oven-roasted tomatoes, chunks of oil-packed tuna, and loads of fresh basil. I mean, is anyone else’s mouth watering right now? This toast recipe is your sign to step out of your comfort zone instead of making the same avocado toast every day. For a gluten-free alternative, try it on sweet potato toast

Hero Ingredient: Two words. Kale. Pesto.

Spaghetti with Summer Tomatoes, Burrata and Basil

Recipe Title: Summer Spaghetti With Tomatoes, Burrata, & Basil

Why We Love It: The world is definitely full of cheese-lovers because like our feta roundup, these 20 mouthwatering recipes that use burrata blew up on Pinterest. Camille boldly states that burrata is her favorite cheese, and I’m not going to lie, I’m starting to lean in that direction (goat cheese, you’ll always have my heart). There is just something about a dollop of burrata that makes a pasta go from beautiful to drop-dead gorgeous, like this summer spaghetti. I mean, it’s basically cheese stuffed cheese—dangerous.

Hero Ingredient: Better be burrata.

Vegan and Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cookies from Café Gratitude

Recipe Title: Vegan/GF Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookies

Why We Love It: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I owe Camille a big thank you for tracking down this recipe. I don’t think I’ve ever met a chocolate chip cookie that I didn’t like, but this one is my best friend… and Pinterest seems to agree. This cookie has a balance of nuttiness and chocolatey-ness that makes my heart sing. One of my sisters is allergic to walnuts, so I usually take those out and the recipe still holds strong.

Hero Ingredient: Perfectly prominent peanut butter.

Yogurt & Granola Breakfast Grazing Board for a Mother's Day Picnic

Recipe Title: Yogurt & Granola Breakfast Grazing Board

Why We Love It: I used to be a huge breakfast girl… and then life got in the way. I count my blessings when I get to sit down and actually have a real breakfast. This gorgeous grazing board, though… the perfect compromise. It has a little something for everyone, is not a heavy meal, and is full of everything you need to start your day. Just looking at it gives me good vibes, so imagine the day you’d have after a breakfast like this.

Hero Ingredient: Purely Elizabeth’s Honey Almond Granola… like Honey Nut Cheerios for adults!

baked feta appetizer

Recipe Title: Baked Feta

Why We Love It: Our roundup of the 10 best feta recipes on the internet truly went wild on Pinterest, and this baked feta recipe was a hit. Since feta isn’t a melty cheese, baking it with olive oil, lemons, and capers just makes it super creamy, spreadable, and flavorful. It’s the appetizer of your dreams: “It’s incredibly simple, looks impressive, and tastes even better,” as Suruchi Avasthi puts it. Serve alone or on a cheeseboard.

Hero Ingredient: Feta—Captain Obvious.

how to roast a whole chicken

Recipe Title: Roasted Chicken With Tomatoes, Lemons, & Cilantro Salsa Verde

Why We Love It: Not only is this roasted chicken Pinterest Picture Perfect, it tastes as good as it looks. One of Camille’s roasted chicken tips is to let the sauce make itself, and simply adding tomatoes, lemons, and garlic into the pan truly takes this recipe to the next level. Although you can totally go without the cilantro salsa verde, I highly suggest you make it… 100% worth the extra step. This is what you’ll be serving at your next dinner party. Easy on the chef, impressive to the guests, it’s no wonder this recipe blew up on Pinterest.

Hero Ingredient: The cilantro salsa verde, no doubt.

smoked salmon flatbread with everything bagel seasoning brunch recipe

Recipe Title: Everything Bagel Smoked Salmon Flatbread With Lemony Cream Cheese

Why We Love It: If I had to choose one food to eat for the rest of my life, it would be an everything bagel. Not the most nutritious thing I could choose, but I’m addicted to the seasoning and this recipe gives me another way to have it (with more nutrition, might I add). While it is not traditional lox, it is still the perfect brunch centerpiece. I love how creative Camille got with this recipe, and it must have paid off since Pinterest loves it too. If you aren’t big on salmon, use this recipe as your inspiration to make your own bagel-inspired flatbread.

Hero Ingredient: The Everything Bagel Seasoning and Capers are neck-and-neck—don’t make me choose.

carrot-cake-cupcakes-camille-styles-9612

Recipe Title: Gluten-Free, Vegan Carrot Cake Cupcakes

Why We Love It: Who knew that gluten-free, vegan cupcakes with vegetables inside could taste so freaking good. These carrot cake cupcakes are a true winner when it comes to simple baking. I made these for my family’s Easter lunch and everyone, including my nine-year-old twin cousins, gave them a thumbs up. The sprinkle of walnuts and dash of cinnamon on top of the buttercream icing makes them truly Pinterest-worthy.

Hero Ingredient: The ingredient with the perfect crunch, walnuts.

spaghetti alla nerano | zucchini pasta

Recipe Title: Spaghetti alla Nerano

Why We Love It: If you set a plate of spaghetti in front of me, I’m going to eat it, but please make it this Spaghetti alla Nerano. Zucchini is one of my favorite vegetables because of the way that it softens and takes on the flavors that it’s cooked with. Using zucchini in the sauce is genius in my opinion and gives it that extra Pinterest touch. I think the Camille Styles team should have a field trip to Italy to try out the real thing… You know, for research purposes.

Hero Ingredient: Zucchini, for making me feel healthy while downing a plate of pasta.

Be kind to yourself.

The post 4 Steps to Rewire Your Inner Critic & Reframe Negative Thoughts appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>

At the end of the day, the last thing any of us need is a negative voice chirping away in our heads. For many of us though, instead of reverberating good thoughts, our inner dialog may tend to skew negative, and I’ve learned the hard way that it can really get in the way of the energy we want to put out into the world.

Let’s be clear: a healthy dose of self-awareness is a good thing, and sometimes that may manifest in constructive criticism. But there’s a fine line between that type and blatant negativity, as I learned more about on this recent podcast episode.

I’ve recently been working to rewire my inner critic. Scroll on for the four-step process I’ve been taking, on repeat, to build a voice that serves me better.

phone, bedimage by nikole ramsay

Listen to What It’s Saying

The first step is getting curious. Actually listen to what it is that your inner critic is saying—and why. Rather than shutting your inner critic down entirely, it’s important to separate constructive criticism from a negative spiral. When you feel like your inner critic is skewing way too negative, take a close listen. Identify when it starts to chirp, and why.

heartache, growth, breakups, thinking, happyimage by ashley kane

Stop to Ask Questions

Now that you’re listening to the contents of your inner voice’s monologues, ask it a few questions. Does your inner voice tend to kick into gear when you’re tired? Does it tend to pipe up at the end of a long workday? Does it criticize how you handle communication? Does it constantly tell you that you can do better? Now, separate the good from the bad. Ask these three questions when your inner critic really gets going.

1. Does this input serve me?

2. Is there something constructive to be taken from this criticism?

3. Is this criticism actually harmful to me?

If the answer to question one is yes, then you are likely dealing with a helpful inner critic. Nice work! Take this criticism and run with it. Use it to go to the next level, build your career, deepen a relationship. If your critic is saying, “You’re not doing your best at work!” maybe she’s right. Use question number two to figure out what actionable steps you can take to fix a real problem. Maybe you need to enact a little career refresh. However, if your answer to question three, “Is this criticism actually harmful to me?”, is yes, then you likely have a detractor as an inner critic. The next step is for you.

Reframe with Positive Input

If you’ve identified your critic as a detractor, figure out how to rewire it. If you’ve already identified that the input is potentially harmful, you need to cut it out. This may sound a little silly but tell your inner voice (audibly, if possible) to shut up. When it’s telling you something like, “you can’t do this,” shut it down. Respond, whether internally, aloud, or on paper, with exactly how you can do something.

Here are a few examples of ways to reframe common negative thoughts:

–Instead of “You can’t do this,” try “Here’s exactly how I can do this.”

–Instead of “You are bad at your job,” try “Here’s the work I’m doing to improve my skills. Here are some recent wins I’ve had that prove I am really pretty badass at my job.”

–Instead of “She’s so much better at [x] than you,” try “Sure, maybe her strengths lie in [x], but I excel at [y] and [z]]”

growth mindset, power of optimism, happy, camille stylesimage by kristen kilpatrick

Repeat

If you’re combating negative inner-talk on a regular basis, this is not likely to be a one-time fix. Try these steps out whenever the harmful side of your inner critic comes out to play. If you take a moment to assess, you’ll start to hear that voice less frequently, and the other voice – the one that spreads positivity, hope, and joy – will go from a whisper to your strongest daily ally.

5 Summer Date Night Ideas That Don’t Require a Babysitter https://camillestyles.com/uncategorized/5-summer-date-night-ideas-that-dont-require-a-babysitter/ https://camillestyles.com/uncategorized/5-summer-date-night-ideas-that-dont-require-a-babysitter/#comments Mon, 13 May 2019 10:00:56 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=115873 summer date night ideas, stroller, city, walking

Baby on board.

The post 5 Summer Date Night Ideas That Don’t Require a Babysitter appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
summer date night ideas, stroller, city, walking

Parents, what’s your biggest hangup with date night? For us it’s finding (and affording) a babysitter. We have countless date ideas, are always eager to spend time together and yet when it comes to actually nailing down a time with a sitter, we’re often times at a loss. On those nights we usually resort to takeout and a movie after bedtime, which I admit, isn’t the worst way to spend an evening. That being said, it’s always nice to breathe fresh air and have a conversation with your spouse. You know, out in the world while wearing something other than sweatpants?

We learned early on in parenthood that a lot of our “dates” we’re going to have to include our kiddo. I know what you’re thinking, it’s not nearly as sexy as that undivided date night attention at a candlelit restaurant and you’re right, it most certainly is not.

But, we’ve learned the hard way that there’s honestly no good excuse not to make time for each other, even if that means having to get a little creative and bring your kiddo along.

Over the last three plus years we’ve gathered multiple ways we can sneak a date in without a babysitter and I feel like from one parent to another I’ve just gotta share these small parenting victories with you all.

beach picnic, baby, mom

Head to the beach, lake, or neighborhood park with a picnic.

Let your kids be involved with the planning on this one. For us this means a trip to the grocery store to pick out their favorite snacks, helping put together the picnic at home and packing everything for a couple hours at the beach, lake, or neighborhood park. Our kiddo is a little planner so I’ve found including him in that process makes it more exciting and enjoyable for us all. Bring a blanket, take a seat, spread out the food, eat and sit back (maybe bring an adult beverage or two so long as you’re not driving), and enjoy some time together while your kids play!

outdoor concert, concert in the park, summer nights

Check out a concert in the park.

One of our absolute favorite things to do in Brooklyn in the warmer months is to take advantage of the Celebrate Brooklyn concert series. Of course there are countless perks to actually attending the shows, but we also learned early on that you can pretty much hear everything from just outside the bandshell in Prospect Park, which is much more ideal when you have your little ones along for the ride. Pack a blanket, a picnic, plenty of toys for the kids and listen to your favorite bands outside! If they’re young enough to fall asleep in their stroller I’d bring that too, and you can really maximize your time. Plus, this is a great way to not only get some time with your spouse, but your friends too!

stroller crawl, baby sitter free date night ideas

Stroller crawl (think pub-crawl minus the pubs).

We’re approaching the age where we will no longer have a stroller for our oldest and it’s breaking my heart just a bit because it’s made clocking some quality time as a couple so much easier. One of our favorite things to do on a Saturday or Sunday morning is to get up and out of the house early and head to a new neighborhood with a pre-planned map of walkable places with the stroller. We typically include a coffee shop, a bakery, a playground, a book store and somewhere to end for lunch.

“Crawling” from each spot to the next with the stroller gives us time to talk while we walk, connect over our week, and set goals for the next.

ice cream, happy, city life

A long walk to an indoor play space + ice cream.

Can you tell we love, love, love food yet? A lot of our ice cream stands, trucks and spots are seasonal, but now that it’s warming up they’re opening their doors, and we’re all about it. On hotter days, we really enjoy stopping for an ice cream and taking a long walk to an indoor play space to cool off. This local spot is our favorite, I mean they even serve Stumptown coffee and fresh squeezed juices. My husband and I love watching our son play while getting to have an untraditional coffee date!

bar, friends, family friendly bar

Grab a drink at a family friendly bar with friends.

This might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but we are all about bringing the whole family to the bar so long as we’re all welcome! In our general neighborhood there are plenty of spots that accommodate kiddos, and we are so grateful for them. Honestly, it’s really not about catching a buzz (although a beer or two doesn’t hurt), but for us, it has been our ticket to socializing with friends. As the first in our circle to have kids we’ve had to find ways to not only connect as a couple but to connect as a couple with our friends. Sites like The Infatuation do a great job of putting guides together based on your city, (like this one). So if you’re wondering where you can bring your kids, do a little digging – I promise it’s worth it!

Have you found any date night hacks that include the kids? I’d love to hear your ideas below in the comments!
